What EQUIPMENT do you need in order to learn the pipes or the drums?

Not much, as it turns out.

First and foremost, we highly recommend starting with an instructor. Bad habits creep in quickly and your instructor can keep you on the straight and narrow with good form and proper technique. It is much easier to teach something correctly the first time, than try to unlearn a bad habit that has already formed.

Here is the short list for both snare drumming and piping on what you will require to take lessons with the band:
Snare Lessons
  • 1 set of Pipe Band drumsticks (yes, these are waaaaay different than kit drum sticks - please confirm with your instructor which you should purchase)
  • 1 practice pad
  • notebook, or folder, or binder etc
  • pencil and eraser
  • metronome (phone apps are usually free)
  • positive attitude
Pipe Lessons
  • for adults: 1 LONG practice chanter, the holes should be the same distance as an actual pipe chanter $80-$100ish*
  • for small kids: the longest practice chanter their hands can hold with all the holes properly covered (by age 10-12, many kids can use an adult practice chanter)
  • notebook, or folder, or binder, etc
  • pencil and eraser
  • metronome (phone apps are usually free)
  • positive attitude

*There are less expensive practice chanters out there, usually made as inexpensive souvenirs / toys. These are generally not actual musical instruments. If you are not sure what to purchase, please contact us for recommendations.
